Our history
During the 1960s, Caguas stood out as a prolific cultural mecca due to the great activity generated in the various spaces dedicated to the arts and culture in general. At that time, there were the Alcázar Theater, the Lido Cinema Theater, the Campoamor Theater, and the Department of Culture's multipurpose municipal amphitheater. Later, other spaces such as Palmer Plaza, the Solá Bezares Indoor Court, and the Solá Morales Ball Park were used for larger events.
In the mid-1980s, the city of Caguas was undergoing a progressive transformation. Cultural diversity and the lack of larger spaces led the municipal administration, led by its then mayor, Ángel O Berríos (1940-2006), to see the need to create a multi-purpose space for civic, cultural, social, and entertainment activities.
This period of growth coincided with an urban reorganization in the city and the arrival of a second large shopping center and other businesses in the area.
Thus, in the 1990s, what was initially known as the City Civic and Cultural Center was born. In 1993, it was inaugurated and renamed the Caguas Arts Pavilion, a space that included the Félix Caballero Café-Theater; an activities hall on the first level; and a multipurpose hall with a large stage on the second level, named the Felipe "La Voz" Rodríguez Hall, which accommodated more than 2,000 people in its retractable bleachers and arena level. On the third level was the José Luis Moneró Hall.
With the arrival of the new millennium and under the administration of William Miranda Marín (1940-2010), the Felipe "La Voz" Rodríguez Hall underwent extensive geometric improvements, transforming it into a modern, high-tech theater and concert hall with a capacity for 1,861 people.
The creation of an entity to oversee and protect this entertainment center was then discussed. The entity, at that time municipal, under the Department of Economic Development and skillfully directed by Mildred Canetti Lozano, hosted art exhibitions and a busy schedule of government, private, and artistic events.
In 2004, Mayor Miranda Marín promoted the creation of the Caguas Fine Arts Corporation to oversee the construction of what would become the Caguas Fine Arts Center, Engineer Ángel O. Berríos Díaz, under the guidance of Carmen Junco as executive director.
